Estimates use typical ranges seen in client accounts and combine overlapping savings so they do not add up past what is realistic. Your real number depends on your account, which is what a review shows.
How to use the AWS cost savings calculator
- Enter your average monthly AWS bill in US dollars. Use a normal month, not one with a one-off spike.
- Tick every line that sounds like your account. If you are not sure, open Cost Explorer and check the matching service.
- Read the range. The low end is what most accounts save with safe changes; the high end needs more work, such as Savings Plans or rightsizing databases.
Example: a $4,000 monthly bill
A startup pays $4,000 a month. Its dev and test servers run all weekend, log groups never expire, and every volume is still gp2. Those three ticks give a range of about 6 to 18 percent, roughly $240 to $720 a month, or $2,800 to $8,600 a year.
Scheduling the dev servers to stop at night is the biggest win. Changing gp2 to gp3 and setting log retention take minutes and carry almost no risk.
Common questions
Is this the same as the AWS Pricing Calculator?
No. The AWS Pricing Calculator estimates what new resources will cost. This estimator looks at a bill you already pay and shows roughly how much of it is waste.
Why is the result capped at 55 percent?
Savings overlap. Stopping an oversized server and then buying a Savings Plan for it does not save twice, so the estimator combines them and stops at a realistic ceiling.
